The first gambling establishment in Singapore could open in 2009
Next June Singapore will announce the winner consortium to build the first casino resort in the country, assured the minister of Industry and Commerce, Lim Hng Kiang. Lim, one of the five ministers who will choose the winner among the four offers presented in March, said the evaluation process to choose the company that will build the casino (probably one of the most expensive in the world) was developing rather well.
Four groups are competing to transform the 20.6 hectares land in the Marina Bay zone into a super luxurious casino, offering conference rooms, a five stars hotel and lots of game rooms.
Harrah’s Entertainment, the world’s second most important casino group, has joined the operator Keppel Land Tld of Singapore, meanwhile MGM Mirage has presented an offer together with CapitaLand. The Malayan consortium Genting International, together with Star Cruises Ltd., company affiliated to Genting Bhd, are the only non-American firms.
The casino, which will be the first of two to be developed in Singapore, could be opening its doors in 2009. Meanwhile, the government has already announced formally that some new offers for a second casino had already arrived.
