Online gambling has doubled up in the last five years, according to an independent investigation that was published by the Department of Culture, Media and Sports. The investigation was made in relation to the first online gambling conference organized by Great Britain in Royal Ascot. Its objective was to assure international regulations for the online gambling activity, as well as interactive TV and gambling through mobile phone. The investigation shows that there are almost a million regular online players, a third of the amount of players of all Europe.
Nowadays, there are about 2300 sites around the world. Many of them are located in a small group of countries. Women have an increasing importance in the online gambling market. During the World Cup, about 30% of the people that visited the British gambling sites were women.
The investigation was made before the decision of the US of prohibiting the payment process for online gambling sites. Three recommendations came out of it: more international cooperation including regulations to avoid problems and underage minors playing, cooperation with the gaming industry and more investigation.
The Gaming Commission is only going to regulate online gambling in Great Britain. The conditions of licenses and practice codes were published in March 2006.
