Bets on the World Cup 2006 matches may experience a rise in Germany, despite soccer’s questioned reputation because of manipulation of matches results. Specialists indicate that the online gambling market will triple this year. In 2005, the gambling business on the internet grew 35%, reaching $3,3 million euros in incomes.
From Berlin to Munich, many offices have been opened due to the worldwide important event to come. The German Soccer Federation and the Soccer League reacted immediately when a suspicious betting system was detected. “We believe that the incidents occurred in Germany are exceptions, but we have taken the necessary measures to prevent it from happening during the World Cup”, explained FIFA secretary Urs Linsi.
Rigorous controls seem hard to put into practice because most bets in Germany are still made through paper tickets in shops, which are extremely difficult to control. As a result, gambling takes place mostly overseas and via internet. Gamblers may not only bet on matches results, but also on the number of goals scored, who may score them, and even the minute goals may be scored.
