Chance games cost, in Latin America, about 250 dollars a year per inhabitant, a number that is above the minimum wage received by most workers of the region. Lotteries of many kinds, slots, casinos, horse races and several bets make of this a very profitable business that handles about 6,000 million dollars a year.
The foreign debt of Latin America and the Caribbean goes up to 735,700 million dollars, according to the IMF. With the income generated from gambling, the entire debt could be covered in about ten years.
However, the growth of this industry in Latin America has come together with an economical improvement, as well as social and political, therefore, when the political and social issues settle, the juridical trust increases, leading to more and better investments.
Guillermo Gabella, president of ALAJA says that the industry is very related to the investments made on technology, entertainment and tourism, and those are long time investments, which is why the regional crisis doesn’t affect the industry too much, but when the recovery comes it becomes a very competitive region.
