The Police in Macau, the “capital of gambling” in Asia, has just dismantled an illegal gambling network related to the World Cup. It was led by three men from Honk Kong, but also other nine people were arrested in two houses on Taipa island in Macau.
Computers and documents were confiscated, stating that 12 million dollars had been gambled. The most important bettors were from China and Hong Kong, where most hazard games are forbidden, leaving Macau as the only location in the region to have legal casinos.
Macau Police, as well as in the nearby territories of Hong Kong and Canton, have increased their efforts in order to fight the inevitable rise of illegal gambling during the World Cup.
Although bets are prohibited in China, there is a National Sports Lottery subsidized by the government and similar to quiniela, in which players have to guess the results of matches of the European league.
