Government to prevent gambling addiction
French government put together an organism
The organism is going to control the offers of the Francaise des Jeux (FDJ), the entity that handles the different types of chance games, in order to limit the population’s addiction to gambling. Jean-Francois Copé, the Budget Minister, presented a committee that will be in charge of the reports on the FDJ’s initiatives to handle the government, in order to protect the weakest from the risk of addiction, so that the activity doesn’t have to be prohibited.

The FDJ is the main chance game operator in France, with a business volume of 8.900 million euros, 2.500 of those go to the State thanks to games such as lotto, and others such as “scratch and win”. There are also equine bets that generate 8.000 million euros and casinos that generate 2.647 million.

In France there are around 250.000 “game-dependents”, according to Marc Valleur, a psychiatrist that specializes in the subject in a medical center of Paris, although the Le Figaro newspaper elevates the number to 300.000 people.

It seems that men are more keen on betting, and also on games and lotto, while on the other hand, women prefer slot machines and “scratch and win” systems.
