Former police Chief accused of protecting gambling mob
Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro
The former chief of the police of Rio de Janeiro, Alvaro Lins, led a group of agents that, in exchange for money, protected the owners of slot machines, informed the Federal Police.
Alessandro Moretti, responsible of investigation of the FP, said to the press that “at least 200 cops” were identified as linked to the mob of the illegal slots and lottery. “Alvaro Lins was the boss of the band of agents linked to the mob”.
Deputy elected in October, Lins, Police Chief in Rio de Janeiro from 1998 to 2006, said he could prove his innocence. Because of the parliamentary immunity he was not taken into custody. In his defense he said that he was the one that ordered the imprisonment of two rival chiefs of the gambling mob, Rogerio Andrade and Fernando Iggnacio, who are currently in jail.
In spite of his defense, the Federal Police pointed out that Lins was giving protection to the band of both sides in exchange of weekly money deliveries.
